Design Concept: BE Bold. BE Fearless. BE YOU. The concept of “BE” strives to inspire users to BE whoever they want, without the fear of being limited. The reception will BE welcoming and encourage new guests to begin laying the foundation for their future. Professional offices with BE accessible for guidance along the path to self-achievement. Training spaces will motivate users to BE productive and develop professional skills for success. A demonstration kitchen will give individuals the opportunity to BE adventurous while experimenting with new, healthy recipes and cooking techniques. Users will practice daily household tasks and learn how to BE independent in a simulated apartment. Individuals will enhance their artistic side and BE creative in the flexible use room by producing unique projects and participating in exercise classes. Opportunities to BE disconnected will be presented in the sensory integration space if users get overwhelmed. Throughout the building, muted colors and natural finishes will allow individuals to BE comforted. Diverse needs will BE accommodated to ensure that everyone can BE successful learners in the program. “BE” aims to provide a center that allows young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder to conquer everyday challenges and emerge into the professional world as whoever they want to “BE”.

Color Theory: Muted colors are proven to have a calming effect on users with ASD. These colors are less intense and control sensory stimulations. Orange is used in the kitchen to promote confidence and enthusiasm. Various shades of green are used in the apartment, training and sensory rooms to make users feel relaxed and promote healing. Blue is used in the office to encourage productivity. Purple is used in used in the flexible use room to enhance creativity and productivity.

Why the Hexagon? Hexagon flooring elements are used as a wayfinding technique to further reinforce the concept. Hexagons promote the process of moving forward through their arrow-like form. Hexagon paths are color-coded to match each room. The pathways utilize the same muted color palette as the walls for consistency. The hexagons create a pattern that promotes a routine that the users can follow each day.
