AMAZON RAINFOREST LEARNING CENTER
Below is a project that Hayley designed for the annual IDEC Design Competition during the Fall of her junior year.
The objective was to design a service learning center that would provide a space for volunteers going on a mission trip to the Amazon Rainforest. Inside the learning center, there needed to be a single apartment for the director of the program so he or she could be close to their work whenever need be. The final concept was Kapôt, a learning center that aimed to bring together a range of volunteers with one mission in mind: Save the Rainforest. The Kapôt Amazon Service Learning Center is a compelling learning environment that promotes human thought and service learning in order to save the Amazon rainforests. The center was geared towards preservation efforts for the rainforest through sustainable and energy efficient design elements. The design of the interior embodied the culture and lifestyle of the indigenous Kayapo Amazon tribe. Kapôt, meaning “central plaza” in the indigenous Kayapo language, was demonstrated in the design of the interior. Similar to the central plazas that form the Kayapo tribal villages and represent the heart of their communities, the collaborative classroom was the central focus of the interior space.
